Goa Tourism ties with Force Gurkha RFC India 2014 as a tourism partner

Rainforest Challenge Rainforest Challenge

The Government of Goa has come forward to lend support to the launch edition of India’s first ever international level off-road motorsport event with the objective to boost and encourage the Indian off-road community which has been long seeking a credible national platform to showcase their talent. Goa Tourism has joined hands with the Force Gurkha Rainforest Challenge (RFC) India 2014, which is set to take place from August 8-14, as the Tourism Partner.

The upcoming motorsport extravaganza is an offshoot of Malaysia’s Rainforest Challenge, which is one of the toughest and the most internationally represented motorsport events in the world. With seven editions held across different parts of the world, India is the eight country to join the international chapters of the RFC. Over 40 teams, both domestic and international, are expected to participate in the launch edition of Force Gurkha RFC India. Moreover, hundreds of off-road enthusiasts representing all major off-road clubs of the country as well as a large number of touring adventurers will be converging to Goa to witness this historic occasion when India takes its first step towards becoming an international sporting destination for the global off-road community.

With a separate participation category being set for touring adventurers at the Force Gurkha RFC India 2014, it fits perfectly with Goa Tourism’s plans of promoting Goa as a destination for adventure tourism. As per Mr. Nikhil Desai, Director-Tourism, Government of Goa, “We are very excited to have the first edition of Force Gurkha RFC India in Goa. It has a synergy with our aim of promoting Goa as a destination for adventure tourists. I wish the organisers the very best for the upcoming motorsport challenge.” Over the years, Goa has hosted numerous international events including the Goa Fest and India Bike Week. However, the major influx of tourists is from October to September with monsoon being the lean season. Goa Tourism now plans to change all that and encourage adventure lovers to visit the state during the monsoons and experience the other ‘wilder’ side of Goa.

Force Gurkha RFC India 2014 will see participants driving through unchartered territory while battling blinding rains, vicious insects and tough terrains. Staying true to RFC beliefs and a strong commitment to preserve Goa’s flora and fauna, the course has been designed away from protected forest territory and wildlife sanctuaries, on a combination of private and government land. The event organisers have adopted an environment charter, the first of its kind for an event in India. In doing so, the organisers are doing their bit to nurture Goa’s pristine beauty. To celebrate nature’s bounty, an ‘Environmental Award’ will be given to the individual or team that shows the utmost care and attention towards the preservation of the environment.

According to Mr. Ashish Gupta, Founder and Director, Cougar Motorsport Pvt. Ltd., the company responsible for bring the event to India,“We are delighted to have Goa Tourism as our tourism partner. It is a matter of great pride for India and the state of Goa in particular that an international event of this stature is going to be held here. Goa is such a beautiful place during the monsoons; the adventure sports scene is thriving during this season. During the planning stages of the event we contemplated about many locations, but due to the specificity of our needs such as the course terrain and connectivity, Goa was an obvious choice. The wild monsoons of Goa will be the perfect backdrop for the Force Gurkha RFC India, giving adventure lovers something to look forward to and also generate good revenue for the tourism industry in Goa. I pray the magical monsoons are kind and pour down on us really hard!”

Cougar Motorsport brings to India the first edition of Force Gurkha RFC

Cougar Motorsport Pvt. Ltd. brings to India the first edition of Force Gurkha RFC India and is all set to thrill from August 8-14 in Goa. Launched in 1997 in Malaysia first, the RFC is considered among the top ten toughest motor races in the world. With the event coming to India, Indian off-road enthusiasts and touring adventurers can get the international experience at home. Interested adventure enthusiasts can participate in the event as Touring Adventurers.

Rainforest Challenge Rainforest Challenge

Force Gurkha RFC India will be a test of the participating teams’ mental and physical skills, companionship, motor skills and vehicle. The teams will have to spend six days fighting the rain, manoeuvring through the changing paths and flooded rivers. They will encounter vicious insects and beautiful sights. The participants will have to traverse close to 250 kms from South to North Goa competing in Special Stages set in natural terrain and prove to themselves that they can conquer anything. As the RFC Founder Mr. Wee says, “Life is an adventure. Live it to the full; don’t wait for tomorrow if you can make it today.”

The Challenge

RFC is not for the weak-hearted. The terrain is not merciful. The six day challenge is divided into four sections – the Prologue, the Predator, the Terminator and the Twilight Zone. There will be 30 Special Stages (SS) divided between the four sections. The SS will test driving and recovery skills in extreme off-road conditions and will be designed by experts from RFC International.

The Prologue will be where spectators can experience all the charged off-road action. This is proposed to be held close to town where the viewers will be amazed by the range of modified 4×4 vehicles and ATVs. The Predator and Terminator sections will involve camping on the jungle fringes. Participants will have to fend for themselves, battle the rain, cook their own meals and set up their own camps. The Twilight Zone is an expedition drive through the jungle. Explore new territory and meet creatures of the dark. Contestants will also have to complete an SS task in this section.

Sounds easy? It won’t be. The lashing rains tend to alter the paths. Participants will have to deal with unpredictable erosions and landslides, fallen trees and other unexpected hurdles.

The first edition of Force Gurkha RFC India is all set to take the country by storm. Explore the other side of Goa from August 8-14 in the toughest off-road motorsport event to hit the country.

Jobs in EFFAT sectors affected by climate change

EFFATClimate change will cause particular disruptions to jobs and economic activity in food production, agriculture and tourism sectors, reported the European Climate Foundation and European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) yesterday.

Moreover, climate change will cause an additional burden for the poor and generate large-scale migration by those whose livelihoods it disrupts.

“This is a wake up call for Europe to prioritise a green economy with decent job creation, the right redeployment programs and training to ensure the safety of green jobs, and reforms to enhance the environmental responsibility of companies,” said Harald Wiedenhofer, General Secretary of the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions (EFFAT).

Climate-related impacts will vary widely between regions, with jobs in rural areas likely to suffer from insufficient access to water, reduced agricultural productivity and food insecurity, and those in urban areas threatened by food insecurity an the breakdown of food systems.

The report is one of a series of thirteen briefings based on the Fifth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published in 2013, which established that warming of the climate system is unequivocal and that human influence on the climate system is clear.

In June, the briefing on climate change implications for tourism reported that sea-level rise and more acidic oceans will threaten coastal tourism infrastructure and natural attractions, while rising temperatures will shorten winter sport seasons, and climate change will lead to changes in bio-diversity, affecting eco-tourism.

A different briefing on agriculture revealed that climate-related impacts are already reducing crop yields, and that this trend is likely to continue as temperatures rise further, in turn increasing food insecurity and price volatility for agricultural commodities, and reducing food quality.

The news is not all bad, and efforts to tackle climate change could create jobs. This is backed up by a recent report commissioned by EFFAT’s agriculture sector concluding that 2 million new jobs could be created in the EU as a result of innovative approaches in green sectors of activity.
