Dilip Parulekar, tourism minister, told TOI that CCP will have additional activities, including decoration for Carnival in the city and hosting a troupe from Brazil. CCP mayor Surendra Furtado maintained that they will do everything except the main float, and if they are not permitted to have their own way, CCP will not grant NOC to tourism department to conduct Carnival in the city, he threatened.

On Wednesday, Parulekar conducted a meeting with various municipal councils to chalk out the programme for the festival. This year too the tourism department has planned a food and cultural festival along with the Carnival festivity. The food and cultural festival will start on February 28 and conclude on March 4.

Agnee, a Indian rock band, Kailash Kher, Rabbi Shergill, Raghu Dixit Project and Sona Mahapatra will perform at the festival, said a source. There will also be a fashion show by Nisha Harale. A magnificent fire display is also on the cards.

Some new items have been included in Carnival celebrations this year like street performances by musicians at various points in the city, King Momo contest etc.

The venue for cultural and food festival has not been decided yet though three venues have been proposed. These are: Campal ground, Merces ground and Lusofonia game venue. The finer details about the festival will be decided in the next meeting which is will be held next week, a source said.

The tourism department will give bigger municipal councils — Panaji, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa 20 lakh each plus 3.5 lakh prize to each council.

Though there has been a demand from the municipal councils to hike the prize money, Parulekar said a decision in this regard will be taken at a later stage.

In the last two years, tourism department has been widely marketing Carnival in the domestic market to draw tourists. It is expecting a crowd of 2 to 2.5 lakh during Carnival week.
