The latest trends in travel and holidays are on show at the annual Berlin International Tourism Fair (ITB).
As the recession recedes, the turnout this year is expected to rise to around 170,000 travel professionals and ordinary members of the public looking for vacation destination ideas.
Event organiser Astrid Zand told euronews: “ITB is the leading international fair for the tourism industry. We have nearly 11,000 exhibitors from 189 countries and we’re the biggest and most international event of this kind in the tourism industry in the world.”
Almost 260 million people work in the industry which is a key driver of economic growth and development in places like Tunisia which has suffered a dearth of tourists since it triggered the Arab Spring.
Tunisia’s Minister of Tourism Amel Karboul said: “Democracy doesn’t work if people don’t have food to eat. And for us, tourism is a big part of the economy. We need all of Europe to help Tunisia, which was the first democracy in the Arab World.”
The event caters for travellers from the richest to the most modest:
Our correspondent in Berlin, Sebastian Saam, concluded: “Here, the tourism industry is showing off everything it has on offer – trends and developments, such as sustainable eco-tourism, which are supposed to make people want to travel even more.”
