MU to host tourism conference

Indian Tourism CongressThe 11th national conference of Indian Tourism Congress (ITC) will be held at Manipur University Centenary Hall on April 5 and 6.

Interacting with newspersons at his office chamber today, MU Vice Chancellor Prof H Nandakumar Sharma said the ITC deciding to hold the annual conference at MU this year is based on the huge potential Manipur possess for development of tourism industry.


The conference themed ‘Strategic Intervention in Tourism: Role in Regional Development’ would be a joint initiative of ITC, MU and Imphal College wherein subject experts would not only study the tourism potential in the State but also suggest effective means for infrastructure development to further promote the tourism sector, said the VC.


opining that setting up hotels of international standard at affordable rates would be helpful in the development of the tourism sector, Prof Nandakumar also pointed out that along with increasing number of hotels there is need for ensuring convenient transport system.


Joining the media briefing IIT TM (Gwalior) director Prof Sandeep Kulshreshtha, who is also ITC senior vice president, Manipur’s scenic landscape and abundant historical sites would be tremendous boost in attracting both domestic and international tourists.


Noting that Manipuris are fair complexioned, have friendly facial attributes and good command over English, Prof Sandeep said with some basic training on tourism and hospitality not only will individuals reap financial gain but the State’s economy will improve significantly.


He also expressed confidence that through promoting tourism sector peace and development would eventually be a hallmark of Manipur.


Vice Chancellor of Maharaja Agrasen University (Himachal Pradesh) and ITC general secretary Prof SP Bansal was also present at the media briefing.
