Sharjah’s investment authority has announced that its Sir Bu Nair Island tourism project is set to be completed in 2017.

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority, also known as Shurooq, said the project will be developed at an estimated cost of AED500 million ($136 million).

Shurooq said the island will be completed in 2017, and will host a luxury five-star hotel and resort, hotel apartments and villas, a village, an amphitheatre, a museum, a mosque, an education centre, a harbour, an airport, and a number of retail outlets.

Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Shurooq, said: “The aim of this landmark project is to turn this vitally important island into a unique destination, one that offers a mix of high-end luxury and comfort, one that fosters a genuine sense of community, and one that captures the region’s vibrancy and cultural heritage in its architecture and offerings.

“The project will stretch over an area of 37,721 square metres, making it one of Shurooq’s most ambitious undertakings to date and the result is set to become one of the rarest gems in the crown of Sharjah and the U.A.E.’s tourist destinations.”

Al Sarkal added that the luxury hotel will feature 60 1-bedroom suite units, in addition to a number of beach chalets and houses. The second part of the hotel will include 17 suites and chalets on the hotel’s Turtle Beach.

The development will also include a 9,693 square metre village that will feature two 2-bedroom villas, 10 3-bedroom villas, four 4-bedroom villas, and one VIP villa.

In addition to the villas, the village will feature a total of thirty 2 and 3-bedroom apartments in both simplex and duplex arrangements.

The development will also include activity centre with student accommodation with 22 6-bed chalets for the various educational programmes that will run on the island.

Sir Bu Nair Island, a marine and wildlife habitat, is located 65 km off the UAE coastline.
